Pick up club head speed this off season!

Increase Clubhead Speed This Winter

We all want to hit the ball longer, and like a lot of people, we've decided that this off season will be spent working out, getting stronger, and getting that clubhead speed up. Below I'll tell you what actually creates more speed and the myths in golf that actually slow us down.

TEMPO:
When I talk about tempo in the golf swing I'm referring to the time it takes for the backswing and downswing. Almost all tour players have a 3/1 tempo, meaning that their backswing takes about 3 times as long as their downswing. Most amateurs I work with are closer to 4/1 or even 5/1. Increasing the speed of the backswing will allow you to swing faster in the downswing and increase clubhead speed. The reason is that the faster we take it back, more force is needed to have the club change direction in transition, which leads to faster clubhead speed in the downswing. So stop trying to be "low and slow" in the takeaway and start swinging faster.

MOTION:
When it comes to speed, we need to be moving. It's very hard to create speed when we start from a perfectly still platform. In golf, that means that we need to let the feet and our pressure move from side to side before we swing. This allows us to build up energy and movement at the start of the backswing. Below is a pressure trace from a long drive participant and one from a player who is trying to stay still. Notice how his pressure is NOT stagnant before the swing. He's moving from side to side, allowing him to explode into the takeaway. The picture on the right is from someone who is trying to stay quiet before the swing. You can see a huge difference in the movement they've made in the top right corner of each picture.

PRACTICE:
Like most things, we need to practice swinging faster to actually swing faster. How often do we try and swing as fast as possible on the driving range? My guess is not very often. Go out and practice swinging fast. Spend at least 5 minutes of every practice session swinging as fast as possible. You'll realize pretty quickly that it doesn't take long for your maximum speed to increase, which in turn, makes your "golf course" speed increase.

There's one thing all great ball strikers have in common...

We've all heard the term "swinging on plane" and getting your swing "in the slot" but what do those things really mean and how can they help your golf swing? First let's talk about what the term "on plane" means. Essentially, on plane means swinging the club on the same line that is formed by your club shaft at address. Below is a picture to help show you what the swing plane is.

We hear a lot about match ups in the golf swing, but what does it really mean and how does it help your golf game? To answer that question simply, there is no perfect golf swing and there is no perfect way to swing the club but the different pieces of the swing do have to compliment each other and not work against each other.

How about if you were standing in a mud pit? Or floating in a pool? We immediately know that we probably couldn't generate much power because we aren't able to use the ground very efficiently. Although we don't think about it much, how we use the ground is a very important element to our success level in golf. From the way we shift our pressure in the backswing and downswing to the way we use the ground to compress and jump up through the ball, we can use the ground to our advantage, an advantage that all great players use. Some simple ideas such as how much pressure we put into our lead foot at set up, or how we shift into our backswing can really help you reach your golfing goals. Click on the video below and I'll show you how one of the longest hitters in golf uses the ground, and more importantly, what you can learn from him. Click to see what one of the longest hitters in the world does with his pressure shift and how he uses the ground so efficiently!

There's nothing more frustrating than missing another green after hitting a great drive...

One of the most common mistakes I see students make in their golf swing is pulling down and in with the arms in transition in order to generate speed. I often refer to this as a death move. This move feels powerful, unfortunately it only causes you to lose speed and become very inconsistent with your impact. By learning how the arms should work in transition, you'll start swinging faster, hitting the ball longer and straighter and shooting better scores. In the short video below, you'll see what should be happening in the golf swing and a very common error that I see a lot of amateurs make. Work on this move for just a couple minutes and you'll see your scores drop quickly and your ball striking improve dramatically. I call it a death move in the golf swing. Learn what it is and how to fix it!
